Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To produce a precursor high for carbon fiber, having low viscosity and suitable for melt-spinning, by using a specific hydrogenation solvent and an assistant solvent in the hydrogenation treatment of coal tar pitch. CONSTITUTION:A hydrogenated pitch is produced by carrying out the hydrogena tion treatment of a coal tar pitch using tetralin as hydrogenation solvent for soft pitch or medium pitch and using tar-based middle oil or heavy oil as an assistant solvent. The hydrogenated pitch is purified to remove free carbon and high molecular weight component and then heat-treated to obtain a precur sor pitch for carbon fiber. The preferable conditions for hydrogenation treatment are, ratio of pitch : tetralin=1:(1.5-3.5), ratio of pitch:assistant solvent=1 : (0.5-1.5), hydrogenation temperature is 400-450 deg.C and retention time is 30-60min, etc.
