Zusammenfassung:	NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R1 is 1-18C alkyl; R2 is optically active alkyl; X and Y are H, F, Cl, or Br; at least one of X and Y is H). EXAMPLE:(S)-4'-n-Dodecyloxy-4-biphenylcarboxylic acid-[3-chloro-4-(2-methylbuto xycarbonyl)anilide]. USE:A liquid crystal element material, stable to moisture and light, having improved weather resistance and capable of being a chiral smectic C liquid crystal within a wide temperature range. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula II is reacted with thionyl chloride to give a product, which is then dissolved in a solvent, e.g. benzene, etc., and reacted with a compound expressed by formula III in the presence of a base, e.g. pyridine, etc., to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
