Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To improve durability in a frictional engager as well as to prevent a gear shifting shock from occurring, by detecting whether gear shifting is abnormal or not, and when detecting anything unusual, constituting a controller so as to limit a shift-up execution area at the next time. CONSTITUTION:An automatic transmission control computer 8 determines a shift step by information data 12-18 to be inputted and controls on-off operations of hydraulic controlling solenoid valves S1-S3. At this time, the controller 8 performs a trouble discriminating program for gear shifting. And, for example, when it is discriminated to be abnormal gear shifting as in the case where the gear shifting is carried out, whereas the gear shifting control of engine torque is not yet performed, shift-up at the next time is restricted. For example, when engine load is higher than the specified value, the specified shift-up is prohibited. With this constitution, such a fear that a frictional engager comes into a severe state is prevented, thus the durability is improved and, what is more, a gear shifting shock is preventable from occurring.
