EMULSION POLYMERIZATION

PURPOSE:To easily obtain a polymer of any desired properties with small variation in the characteristic values, by first using, as polymerization solvent a specific organic compound to prepare a polymer solution followed by emulsion polymerization in the presence of an emulsion formed by mixing said solution and water. CONSTITUTION:First, at least one kind of radically polymerizable monomer is polymerized using, as polymerization solvent, an organic compound compatible with both said monomer(s) and water and capable of partitioning to the resultant (co)polymer (e.g., organic solvent, plasticizer, surfactant) to form a homogeneous (semi)transparent polymer solution. Second, this polymer solution is mixed with water followed by stirring to obtain an emulsion. Third, at least one kind of radically polymerizable monomer is brought to emulsion polymerization in the presence of the emulsion mentioned above to finally obtain the objective polymer.
