METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONTINUOUS CASTING

PURPOSE:To surely connect a molten metal to a dummy bar and to prevent the breakage thereof by inserting the dummy bar into a tundish nozzle and supplying electric power between the molten metal in the tundish and the dummy bar to melt the front end of the dummy bar. CONSTITUTION:The dummy bar 66 and a connecting member 68 are inserted into the tundish nozzle 37 and a metallic material to be melted is thrown into the tundish 31. A coil for induction heating is energized by the electric power. A power source device is thereafter driven to impress a voltage between the dummy bar 66, a mold 38 and electrodes. The current flowing between the auxiliary electrode, the mold 38 and the electrodes flows through the member 68 and the dummy bar 66 and, the member 68 heats up. The molten steel in the tundish 31 melts when the heating-up and melting of the member 69 progress. The molten steel in the tundish 37 flows into the mold 38 through the nozzle 37 and a break ring 47 when the dummy bar 66 is intermittently pulled. The molten steel is cooled and molded by the mold 38 by which the desired ingot is obtd.
