Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To obtain a water-soluble thickening agent highly effective even in low concentrations, by the alkali saponification of a graft copolymer from starch and specific ratio of acrylonitrile-styrene. CONSTITUTION:(A) Starch (pref. of naturally-occurring one) and (B) acrylonitrile are subjected, in the presence of styrene, to graft copolymerization, pref. using as a catalyst, ammonium cerium (IV) nitrate so that the molar ratio of the acrylonitrile to the styrene falls between 99.9/0.1 and 91/9. The resultant copolymer is saponified by alkali to obtain the objective thickening agent.
