Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To improve the gradation characteristic of an intermediate gradation image recording by adding an error between an input and an output for a peripheral picture element whose recording output is determined already, to an input picture element level, comparing it with plural threshold levels, and determining a recording level. CONSTITUTION:The picture element level xij of an input image signal is added to a signal weighted to an error eij between an input and an output for a picture element whose recording output is determined already, from an operator 3 by an adder 1, and an added output x'ij is inputted to a comparator 2 and a subtracter 5. The signal x'ij is compared with plural threshold levels Tk (k=1- m) by the comparator 2, and in case of Tk>xij>Tk-1, and T1>xij, a comparator output Yij=Tk-1, and ''0'' are outputted to a dot generator 6 and the subtracter 5, respectively. The subtracter 5 outputs the error eij of the signal x'ij and Yij, and it is stored in a RAM4. With respect to the error eij outputted from the RAM4, the operator 3 multiplies it by a prescribed weight coefficient and outputs it to the adder 1. The generator 6 generates a dot pattern corresponding to the signal Yij and supplies it to a recording device.
