Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To improve electrooptic characteristics such as response speed and threshold voltage by providing a stage for roughing the surface of an insulating film from the specified direction and a process for subjecting the surface to a rubbing treatment from the direction opposite from the roughening direction. CONSTITUTION:The layer of a transparent electrode 2 consisting of indium oxide is formed on one surface of a transparent glass substrate 1 and a layer of a polyimide resin is then deposited as the insulating film 3 on the electrode 2 by utilizing a spinner. The insulating film is thoroughly dried and thereafter a polishing agent is sprayed thereto by a dry honing machine. The rough surface 5 having directional projections 6 is formed when the polishing agent is sprayed from the specific direction of the substrate. The projections are so formed that the sloped parts 7 thereof point the direction opposite 8 from the spraying direction. The rough surface is then subjected to the rubbing treatment by a cotton fabric roller in the opposite direction 8 in succession of the above-mentioned treatment. Two sheets of the resultant substrates 1 are prepd. and are positioned to face each other in such a manner that the rubbing directions are opposite from each other. A container is made between these substrates and a liquid crystal is injected and hermetically sealed into the container, by which the liquid crystal display element is obtd.
