Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:Soft or medium coal tar pitch is treated under specific conditions to prepare a pitch free from free carbon and the product is heat-treated to give precursor pitch for carbon fiber which has good fiber-forming, preoxidizing and carbonizing properties. CONSTITUTION:Soft or medium coal tar pitch is steeply raised in its temperature and heat-treated for a short time over 500 deg.C to form 5-80wt% of meso phase spherulites. The spherulite are extracted with an aromatic solvent to separate the insoluble fraction containing the meso phase spherulites, then, the solvent is distilled off to obtain a pitch free from free carbon. The pitch is heat-treated at 350-500 deg.C under reduced pressure or as an inert gas is blown in, to give the objective precursor pitch.
