COKE

PURPOSE:To provide coke having excellent mechanical properties, such as high strength, which is useful as carburizer in cupola to promote carburization of molten iron and sharply reduce sulfur content of molten iron, prepd. by adding a Ca compd. to raw material for coke to be dry distilled. CONSTITUTION:The coke is obtained by dry distillation, e.g., at about 500- 1,200 deg.C of formed raw material for coke which consists of coal, oil coke, coke breeze, binder, etc. and to which at least one Ca compd. selected from among CaO, CaCO3, CaC2, CaF2, Ca(CN)2 and CaSO4 has been added in such an amt. that ash after combustion may have a basicity of lower than 1.0. The coke facilitates operation of cupola without the need of any special carburizer. Because of its high density and high cold strength, the coke does not break in storage and use. It increases basicity and fluidity of slag, expedites efficient absorption of carbon by molten iron and decreases the sulfur content of cast iron as a result of reaction of Ca compd. with sulfur.
