Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To provide a novel bacterial strain belonging to Escherichia coli, and capable of proliferating by vigorously decomposing and assimilating starch in a medium containing starch as a main carbon source [Escherichia coli 24K (FERM-P No.7260)]. CONSTITUTION:The above novel bacterial strain is separated from soil e.g. by the integrated culture process. The separation is carried out as follows. The soil is added to a liquid starch medium, and cultured at about 37 deg.C for about 24hr under shaking. The obtained culture liquid is diluted, inoculated in a flat agar medium, and cultured by the standing culture process. The obtained colony is transplanted to a flat agar starch medium and cultured at about 37 deg.C for about 3 days. The medium is treated with iodine vapor, and the colony having an obvious transparent zone around the colony is separated to obtain the objective starch-assimilating strain.
