The invention relates to antibodies from the class of immunoglobulins A, M and E against the peptide subunit pentapeptide L-Ala-D-Glu(L-Lys-D-Ala-D-Ala) of the peptidoglycan in biological investigation material and against bacterial cell walls containing these peptidoglycans, characterised by a) specific binding to pentapeptides of the general formula R - A1 - D-Ala (I) in which R is an amino acid moiety with 1-3, preferably 3 amino acids from the group comprising Gly, L-Ala, D-Glu, L-lys and A1 is one of the amino acids D-Ala, D-Ser, D-Val or D-Leu, or b) specific binding to isolated bacterial cell walls containing pentapeptides of the general formula I or c) specific binding to gram-positive bacteria containing pentapeptides of the general formula I, to process for the preparation thereof, to process for their quantitative determination and to reagent.
