PREVENTION OF DEPOSITION OF POLYMER SCALE

PURPOSE:To prevent deposition of polymer scale irrespective of a recipe of polymerization or a kind of polymer, by previously forming a film or films of an inorganic substance and a coupling agent on the wall of a vessel, the surface of an apparatus, or the like, in contact with a monomer or a polymer. CONSTITUTION:A solvent solution or dispersion of an inorganic substance (e.g., polyphosphoric acid or colloidal silica) is applied to a polymerization vessel or an apparatus for handling a polymer, i.e., the wall of a vessel or pipe or the surfaces of like apparatuses in contact with a monomer or a polymer, and the applied solution is dried. The resulting coated surface is treated with a silane coupling agent (e.g., alpha-aminopropyltriethoxysilane) or a titanate coupling agent (e.g., isopropyltrimethacryl titanate), or alternatively, a solvent solution or dispersion containing both the inorganic substance and the coupling agent is applied thereto and dried. Deposition of polymer scale can be prevented and polymerization in a stainless steel apparatus or the like, becomes possible also in fields where the polymerization can not be performed without using a glass-lined apparatus.
