PURPOSE:To extract features stably at a high speed with simple constitution, by extracting a subordinate pattern by scanning a pattern register vertically, horizontally and slantingly by a character pattern recognition device. CONSTITUTION:After a character pattern is detected as an optical signal, it is converted photoelectrically by photoelectric conversion part 2 and stored in register 3. Next, line width (w) of the character pattern is detected by line-width calculation part 4, and register 3 is scanned in prescribed directions to extract entry points which satisfy l>=Nw (N; constant) as to continuous length (l) and line width (w) of entry points in the scanning directions of the character pattern stored in register 3. Thus, a subordinate pattern expressing stroke components in the scanning directions is extracted, so features of the character pattern are extracted by feature matrix extraction part 8 to send out character name output 10.
