PURPOSE:To extract a quantity of features which is not influenced by the inclination of a character, sweeping-up of a line, and the length of a stop, etc. due to habits peculiar to writers, by extracting back parts interposed between strokes of the character and by using the projected back parts as a feature pattern of the character. CONSTITUTION:Grid points during the time when an FF9 is set are written successively in a horizontal face part feature memory 11, and as the result, back parts interposed between strokes for horizontal scanning are stored. Grid points during the time when an FF10 is set are written successively in a vertical face part feature memory 12, and as the result, back parts interposed between strokes for vertical scanning are stored. A feature count part 16 interposed between both faces counts projections of the horizontal or vertical direction of both face parts, and a feature count part 17 interposed between horizontal faces counts projections of the horizontal or vertical direction, and a feature count part 18 interposed between vertical faces counts projections of the horizontal or vertical direction of vertical face parts.
