Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To obtain a thin protection film which has high hardness, low gas permeability, high strength to injuries and a low frictional coefficiency, by forming the protection film on a magnetic thin metallic film containing Co by plasma polymerization and with use of the gas containing the saturated hydrocarbon of 1-14C. CONSTITUTION:A pair of counter electrodes 3 and 3 are provided into a vacuum container 2, and an AC power supply 4, for example, is connected to both electrodes 3. Then the saturated hydrocarbon gas of 1-14C is supply through a pipe 5. A plasma polymer film of saturated hydrocarbon is formed on the surface of a ferromagnetic thin film containing Co provided on a film supporter F while the supporter F set between electrodes 3 and 3 is dent to a take-up roll 6B from a supply roll 6A. Thus it is possible to obtain a magnetic recording medium having a small spacing loss between a head and a magnetic layer and contains a protection film that excels in the anticorrosive performance, the driving performance and the durability. Furthermore a lubricant of the higher fatty acid, its ester, etc. can be applied on the protection film.
