Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To remove mercury from sulfuric acid by adsorption in a high yield at a low cost by bringing the sulfuric acid contg. mercury into contact with an ion exchange resin having thiol groups. CONSTITUTION:Upper and lower resin columns 1, 2 are packed with an ion exchange resin having thiol groups such as an ion exchange resin 4 whose matrix is polystyrene so that the resin 4 is held between two sheets of glass wool 3. Hot water in a thermostat 5 is circulated through jackets around the columns 1, 2 and a hot water line 13 with a pump 6 to heat the ion exchange resin 4 to about 50 deg.C. Sulfuric acid 10 contg. mercury is sent to a storage tank 9 and fed to the top of the column 1 through a sulfuric acid line 12 with a pump 8. The fed sulfuric acid is allowed to flow down through the columns 1, 2 in order. During this time, mercury is adsorbed on the ion exchange resin 4. The mercury-free sulfuric acid is stored in a storage tank 7.
