PURPOSE:To increase the working rate of device, by reducing the burden of operator for the character correction, through the correction of temporary code only, if a character unable to read-in is produced in a character recognizer. CONSTITUTION:The character on the document 1 is read in at the observation section 2, the input video signal is given to the character characteristic pickup section 3 to pick up the characteristic and the characteristic data added with the character code stored in the dictionary section 5 is fed to the characteristic matching circuit 4, it is collated with the characteristic of the input character to calculate the distance with it, and the voltage is the threshold value or less at the discrimination section 6, it is regarded as being recognized, and the character code is fed to the recognition result storage section 7. If it is disable to recognize at the discrimination setion 6, the read-in disable signal is fed to the pickup section 3, and the corresponding characteristic is registrated at a part of the dictionary section 5 and the read-in disable signal is given to the temporary code generating section 11 to produce the temporary code and it is fed to the storage section 7. The input character after that is collated with the characteristic of the dictionary section 5 to recognize the character code including the temporary code. The recognized temporary code is corrected into the normal character code by referencing the corresponding character pattern.
