Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To shorten the oxidizing treatment time and prepare carbon fibers having improved quality, performance and productivity, by heating precursors in an oxidizing atmosphere at a specific temperature, and bringing the heated precursors into intermittent contact with a heating body at a specified temperature to oxidize and carbonize the heated precursors. CONSTITUTION:Precursors, e.g. polyacrylonitrile type fibers, are heated in an atmosphere of an oxidizing gas, and oxidized to give >=2%, preferably 2-5%, moisture content. The oxidized precursors are then brought into intermittent contact with the surface of a heating body, e.g. a heated roll, at 220-400 deg.C, preferably 250-380 deg.C, to give =800 deg.C to give the aimed carbon fibers.
