CONSTITUTION:Crude copper is melted by heating to about 1,200-1,350 deg.C in a vacuum furnace kept at about 0.05-100Torr degree of vacuum. A gas contg. oxygen such as air is introduced into the furnace from a hole pierced in the furnace, and the gas is brought into contact with the molten crude copper. Impurities, especially Sb, Bi and As are efficiently removed from the crude copper.
