LIQUID-CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT

PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid-crystal display element with good visibility by sealing specific liquid crystal in liquid-crystal layers between upper and lower layers of a multilayered liquid-crystal display element. CONSTITUTION:The two-layer liquid-crystal display element consists of glass substrates 11, 17, and 24, EC electrodes 12, 16, 18, and 23, overcoat layers 13 and 15 facing sideways, a phase transition liquid layer 14 which contains an added chiral component and has positive dielectric anisotropy, vertically or slantingly oriented layers 19 and 22, nematic liquid crystal 20 with negative dielectric anisotropy, a reflecting plate 25, and sealing materials 26 and 27. The phase transition liquid crystal obtained by adding the chiral component to the nematic liquid crystal which has high scattering performance and positive dielectric anisotropy is sealed in the upper liquid-crystal layer 14, so the coloring condition of decolored dichroic pigments in the lower liquid crystal 20 is reduced and the phase transition liquid crystal 14 in the upper layer becomes transparent in the colored state by applying a voltage to increase the contrast of the colored layer in the lower layer 20, improving the visibility.
