Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as a drug effective to promote the digestive function, economically in an industrial scale, by treating apocarnitine which is a synthetic intermediate for the preparation of carnitine by chemical reaction, with an enzyme produced by microorganisms. CONSTITUTION:An optically active carnitine is prepared by treating apocarnitine which is a synthetic intermediate for the preparation of carnitine by chemical reaction, with an enzyme produced by microorganisms. For example, Enterobacter sp. Y-239-b strain (FERM-P No.6976) belonging to Enterobacter genus is cultured in a medium added with apocarnitine sulfate, the culture liquid is centrifuged, the supernatant liquid is treated with a strongly acidic cation exchange resin and eluted with ammonia water, the eluate is concentrated in vacuum, and L-carnitine fraction is separated by high-performance liquid chromatography. Oily L-carnitine can be obtained from the above fraction.
