Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To obtain carbon fibers having a high strength and modulus, by spinning a pitch, and infusibilizing the resultant fiber pitch under tension. CONSTITUTION:A spinning pitch consisting of premesophase carbonaceous material of further mosophase carbonaceous material is spun to form fiber pitch, which is then infusibilized and carbonized preferably in the presence of oxygen at 200-350 deg.C under preferably >=12g/mm. tension and if necessary graphitized to give the aimed pitch based carbon fibers.
