Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To provide a backing steel material for welding by which the penetration beyond the theoretical throat depth is obtainable in use and the higher strength can be expected in a backing steel material having a square section, by forming a groove-like notch on the top surface of the section from the one side part to the upper part. CONSTITUTION:A groove-like leftward notch 1D is formed on the top surface 1B of a backing steel material 1A having a square section shown in the figure, from the left part toward a left side part 1C. If such body 1A is used for welding one member 2 and the other member 3, a penetrated part 4 is formed on the notched top surface of the body 1A. As a result, a defect in the root part such as lack of penetration is prevented, the quality of welding is stabilized, and the penetration is over the theoretical throat depth and is permissible.
