Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To enable roll grinding with an on-line grinder and to prolong the period for changing the roll by comparing the respective measured values before and after rolling of a steel plate or the like. CONSTITUTION:When rolls 10, 11 are pressed to the small diameter part 9 of a work roll 1 by a cylinder 20, a beam 12 and a rod 16 parallel with the roll 1, and a rangefinder 19 heads for the axial center of the roll 1. When the rod 10 is driven in an arrow (b) direction by a stepping cylinder 17, while measuring the distance (a) between the rolls 10, 11 and the surface of the roll 1 by the rangefinder 19 the rangefinder 19 advances in parallel with the axial center of the roll and the distance (a) is measured over the entire region of the barrel length of the roll. The figure on the shape of the roll is obtd. in accordance with the position signal and distance signal of the cylinder.
