Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To carry out the catalytic vapor-phase alkylation of a phenolic compound having o-hydrogen atom with a saturated aliphatic alcohol, economically, by using a reaction apparatus composed of or coated with a metallic material containing specific amounts of carbon, nickel, chrominum and iron. CONSTITUTION:One or more compounds selected from phenolic compound or anisole having at least one o-hydrogen atom are alkylated by the catalytic vapor-phase reaction with a saturated aliphatic alcohol using a reaction apparatus wherein the whole apparatus or at least the part of the apparatus contacting with said reaction raw material and/or reaction product is composed of or coated with a metallic material containing =3wt% of nickel, >=13wt% of chromium and
