PRODUCTION OF 2-MERCAPTO-1,3,4-THIADIAZOLE

PURPOSE:Dimethylformamide is used as a solvent to effect the reaction between a hydrazine and carbon disulfide, followed by heating, to produce the titled compound inexpensively with simple operations through two-stage process in high purity and yield. CONSTITUTION:Hydrazine or a thiohydrazide of formulaI(X is alkyl, amino, alkylamino, mercapto, aryl) is mixed with dimethylformamide in an amount of 0.5-8 times the quantity of the hydrazine or hydrazide. Then, the reaction with carbon disulfide is carried out at -10-60 deg.C to form a dithiocarbaminic acid of formula II (the first-stage reaction). Then, the reaction mixture is heated at 45- 150 deg.C (the second-stage reaction) to give 2-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole of formula III.
