Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To join both ends of a strip mateial automatically to form an endless belt by retaining both the ends thereof based on measured variables on the position and shape thereof so that the material may be bent to flush both the ends thereof. CONSTITUTION:Continuous strip material is cut off to a specified length and at the same angle from the tip thereof and carried into a conveyor 3. A TV camera 69 measures variables on the position and the shape of both ends of a strip material under the irradiation of light 68 to calculate the width-wise center 75 of the strip material T and the cut angle theta of the actual tip end. Then, as soon as the length-wise center of the strip material T arrives right above a peeling mechanism 11 at the center, the conveyor 3 stops. Then, the attitudes of individual retaining members 52 are controlled so that they separately match both ends of the strip material T to retain. Then, the retaining members 52 are moved correcting the attitudes thereof so that the strip material T is bent in a ring while both the ends thereof are positioned to face each other parallel. Then, both the ends of the strip material T are joined together with a joining means 70.
