Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To obtain a display element having good reliability and image responsiveness in a display element which performs displaying with vapor bubbles by providing bubbling nuclei on exothermic elements for forming the vapor bubbles. CONSTITUTION:A pulse signal is applied by scanning to a thin film 4'a of a transparent exothermic resistor to conduct electricity thereto by the 1st driving circuit 6-1 while a thin film 4'b' of a transparent exothermic resistor is held conducted with electricity by the 2nd driving circuit 6-2, and when electricity is conducted to the 4'b and the pulse signal is not applied to 4'c, the transparent exothermic resistance elements of the films 4'a, 4'b and the transparent exothermic resistance elements of the film 4'b' both evolve heat and bubbles 5a, 5b are easily formed with the bubbling nuclei of dents 26 as central nuclei. The transparent exothermic resistance element of the film 4'c does not evolve heat; therefore, even if the transparent exothermic resistance element of the film 4'b' facing oppositely to the same evolves heat, the bubble 5 is not formed. Illuminating light 7b is transmitted through, for example, the bubble 5b and the illuminating light is visible. On the other hand, the light in the specific wavelength region of the illuminating light 7a, 7b is absorbed by the laser 1 in the parts where no bubbles are formed and said parts are visible as a liquid layer 1 having a color.
