Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:A mixture of chlorobenzyl halide and chlorobenzal halide, as a raw material, is made to react with carbon monoxide and an alcohol, then hydrolysis or saponification and the reaction with an alkali metal hydroxide are effected to permit advantageous production of the titled compound. CONSTITUTION:Chlorobenzyl halide containing chlorobenzal halide is used as a starting substance to effect the reaction with carbon monoxide and an alcohol such as methanol in the presence of a basic substance such as ammonia and a cobalt carbonyl catalyst to give a chlorophenylacetic ester. Then, the product is hydrolyzed or saponified into chlorophenylacetic acid, its metal salt or their mixture and an alkali metal hydroxide such as sodium hydroxide is made to act on the product in the presence of copper or its compound to give hydroxyphenylacetic acid. EFFECT:The yield is higher than in case of chlorobenzyl halide only. USE:Intermediate of medicines such as antibiotics or anti-inflammatory.
