MANUFACTURE OF PIVALONITRILE

1. Process for the preparation of pivalonitrile, (CH3 )3 C-CN, characterised in that pivalic acid is reacted with ammonia, if appropriate in the presence of steam, over an aluminium oxide catalyst, in the gas phase, at temperatures of 370-430 degrees C.
