Phase interface process for the production of aromatic polyesters from iso- and/or terephthalic acid dichlorides, diphenols, chain terminators and optionally branching agents, in the presence of an alkali hydroxide and 0.2 to 3.0% by weight, based on the aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichlorides used, of a tertiary amine, characterised in that the process is carried out using an excess of 0.3 to 1.8 mol % of the alkali hydroxide, based on phenolic hydroxyl, and the tertiary amine contains 1 to 4 heteroatoms incorporated in a 4- to 7- membered cycloaliphatic compound, at least one of these heteroatoms being a tertiary nitrogen atom.
