A process for coating a substrate by applying an aqueous emulsifier-containing polymer dispersion to the substrate in a conventional manner, the substrate and the polymer dispersion being at different temperatures, and drying the coated substrate, wherein the polymer dispersion contains from 1 to 10 % by weight, based on the dispersion, of an N-vinyllactam polymer exhibiting inverse solubility in water, and is at a temperature above the temperature Tvs at which its viscosity undergoes an abrupt change, and the temperature of the substrate is below Tvs .
