Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To prepare the titled raw material pitch capable of easily forming a meso phase and giving a carbon fiber having excellent elastic modulus and strength, by mixing a coal liquefaction pitch with a specific ratio of a nucleus- hydrogenated bi- or tricyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and heat-treating the mixture under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:(A) Coal liquefaction pitch (pitch having a boiling point of >=200 deg.C and obtained by coal liquefaction) is mixed with (B) a nucleus-hydrogenated bi- or tricyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. tetralin, decalin, etc.) at a ratio (A:B) of 1:0.1-2 by volume, heat-treated at 370-480 deg.C under a pressure of 2-50kg/cm .G usually for 15-20hr, and if necessary, distilled to remove the light fraction. EFFECT:The increase of the softening point of the pitch in the conversion to meso phase and the formation of the quinoline-insoluble high molecular component can be suppressed, and a high-quality precursor pitch is obtained.
