Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To control base current to improve chopper efficiency by a method wherein the base drive current of a transistor for a chopper is changed over using a multistage switching element in proportion to the volume of collector current. CONSTITUTION:Collector current in a transistor 3 for a chopper 2 is detected by a current detector 10 and a voltage signal is allowed to be generated from a voltage current circuit 20 in proportion to the volume of the current detected. The signal is compared in comparators 17a-17n and inputted to AND gates 18a-18n, while an ON-OFF signal is inputted from a conduction control circuit 8. As a result, thyristors 15a-15n are made conductive in turn, causing bypass current to become larger and increasing the base current. In this way, chopper efficiency is improved because the generation of heat in a base drive circuit is reduced.
