Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To increase the running performance, wear resistance and electromagnetic conversion properties, by providing a thin film of polyvinylbutyral on at least either one of a magnetic metal thin film and a rear surface of a support, in a metallic thin film type magnetic recording medium. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic metal thin film is formed on a nonmagnetic support by vacuum deposition and sputtering methods. The thin film of polyvinyl butyral is formed on at least one of the magnetic metal thin film and a rear surface of a support with the magnetic metal thin film to form the objective magnetic recording medium by coating an organic solvent solution of the polyvinylbutyral and drying it. The polymerization degree of the polyvinylbutyral to be used is preferably 200-1,500, and the degree of butyral is preferably 55-75mol%. Further, the object of this invention can more effectively be achieved by incorporating a lubricant such as fatty acid and higher alcohol to the polyvinylbutyral.
