Zusammenfassung: | PURPOSE:To obtain p-chlorotoluene industrially and advantageously, by the nuclear chlorination of toluene in the presence of a specific pheoxathiin compound, a chlorinated compound thereof or a mixture thereof capable of giving a very high selectivity for the p-position as a co-catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Toluene is subjected to the nuclear chlorination in the presence of a Lewis acid as a catalyst to give a nuclear chlorinated toluene. In the process, one or more selected from phenoxathiin compound expressed by the formula (R is methyl group at the 1-and/or 3-position; m is an integer 0-2; X is Cl when m is 0, and H when m is 1-2), e.g. 6,9-dimethyl-2,8-dichlorophenoxathiin or a chlorinated phenoxathiin compound prepared by the further high chlorination thereof or a mixture thereof are used as a co-catalyst. The reaction is preferably carried out at 0-40 deg.C due to the high selectivity for the p-position of the co- catalyst at a low temperature. |
