Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To produce a high-purity ethyl ester at a low cost from terephthalic acid, by carrying out the 1st stage reaction while maintaining a ratio of unreacted ethylene glycol (fEG) in a homogeneous liquid-phase reaction mixture to the reaction mixture at a specified level. CONSTITUTION:Terephthalic acid (TPA) and ethylene glycol (EG) are fed continuously to a reactor, and TPA is continuously esterified at 240-280 deg.C in at least two stages so that the final conversion is at least 80% based on acid charge. In this esterification, the ratio of fEG, that is, EG not bound to TPA in the reaction mixture constituting the homogeneous portion containing EG, an esterified product and TPA dissolved therein, is maintained at 2-15wt.% based on the reaction mixture. At least the 1st stage reaction is carried out at an fEG content within the above range.
