Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To obtain the highly active hydrogenation catalyst containing no chromium by a method wherein an aqueous solution containing an anime complex of copper is contacted with a metal oxide having a surface hydroxyl group under an alkaline condition and the treated metal oxide is subjected to reduction treatment. CONSTITUTION:As the hydrogenation catalyst used in selectively preparing ethylene glycol or glycolic ester by hydrogenating oxalic diester, one prepared by a method wherein an aqueous solution containing an anime complex of copper is contacted with a metal oxide having a surface hydroxyl group such as TiO2, SiO2 or the like under an alkaline condition and the resulting treated metal oxide is subjected to reduction treatment is used. This hydrogenation catalyst contains no chromium and generates reaction with good efficiency.
