Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new esterase useful as a catalyst or the like for producing optically active 6-aminochroman-3-acetic acids (ester). SOLUTION: This new ester hydrolase has the following physicochemical properties: Enzymatic action, acting as a catalyst for reaction hydrolyzing an ester compound to a compound having carboxylic acid group and an alcohol compound and transesterification reaction between an ester compound and an alcohol compound; specificity to substrate, capable of preferentially hydrolyzing (R) isomer of 6-aminochroman-3-acetic acid ester and acting on an ester of a straight-chain fatty acid with p-nitrophenol, more strongly as carbon number of fatty acid becomes smaller; molecular weight, 50,000±2,000 (SDS-PAGE); optimum pH, 7-10; optimum temperature, 55-60 deg.C, stability to temperature, capable of retaining >=90 wt.% hydrolytic activity even when allowed to stand for 30 min at pH 7.2 and
