PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optionally set the sequences of image data conversion processing and character recognition processing by a photoelectric converting part and a character recognizing part by providing a character recognizing part which selects a recognition area from image data in each recognition item based on a recognition specification code and the number of residual originals and performs character recognition. SOLUTION: In a terminal controlling part 11, when a terminal communicating part 14 receives a recognition specification code, the recognition specification code reads an original through a photoelectric converting part 13. It is decided whether it is character recognition of read image data or character recognition of image data that is sent from the a host device 30. The part 11 controls an original carrying part 12, sends an original to the part 13, makes the original to be read there and acquires image data. The part 11 controls such a character recognizing part 15 as to recognize a character of the image data that is acquired based on a received recognition specification code and sends a recognition result to the device 30. Also, if an unrecognized item exists in the recognition specification code, the image data is sent to the device 30.
