Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To exactly identify even a precisely forged medium by automatically reading identification information through the conveyance process of a medium, identifying it and visually confirming the identification information while irradiating the medium with light in that conveyance process. SOLUTION: A paper money identifying device 11 horizontally inserts a paper money A to be identified into a paper money inserting port 13 opened on one side of a device main body 12 having a rectangular form. The inserted paper money A is identified in the internal conveyance process, moved straight as it is and discharged from a paper money discharging port 14 opened on the other side. The identified result of the paper money A identified at the time of this conveyance is automatically displayed on a display 15 arranged on the side of a rear part on the upper surface of the device main body 12. Further, a clerk looks at the feature information of the paper money A conveyed inside from a transmission window 16 arranged on the side of a fore part on the upper surface of the device main body 12 so as to artificially and visually identify it. Therefore, automatic identification information and manual visual identification information can be simultaneously provided when identifying the medium and while having high identification performance, the medium can be efficiently identified in a short time.
