Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a recording layer for an optical recording medium having good optical stability and preservable stability and high sensitivity by using a compd. prepd. by providing a cyanine dyestuff of an idolenine system with a specific substituent. SOLUTION: The compd. described above is the compd. expressed by formula I. In the formula, A, B denote 1-8C alkyl, halogen, nitrile, nitro, carboxyl group, -COO-R3 ; either of A or B is a nitro group; R1 , R2 , R5 are 1-8C alkyl, 3-8C alkenyl, 3-14C aralkyl, -(Y-O)q-R3 -Z (Y is 2-4C alkylene; R3 is 1-20C bivalent hydrocarbon; Z is H, halogen); X is -C(CH3 )2 -, -O-, -S-, -NR4 - (R4 is H, -(Y-O)q-R3 - Z); An is anion; (p) is 1 to 3; (q) is 1 to 4; (r) is 0 to 4. Formula II includes an example of the cyanine dyestuff cation exclusive of anion. The compd. is used for the medium capable of making writing and reproducing at a wavelength 621-690 nm.
