PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the read quality of an image by preventing a play of an optical unit in a unit guide section in the case of sliding the optical unit in the subscanning direction. SOLUTION: The reader is configured to read an original placed on an upper side of a contact glass 3 while moving an optical unit 4 along a unit guide section 7a. In this case, the unit guide section 7a and a slide section 5a of the optical unit 4 are in face contact with each other at least by two sides. Thus, in the case that the slide section 5a slides on the unit guide section 7a by the drive by a driver 9, since the two sides are in face-contact with without fail without being parted by the self-weight of the optical unit 4, the, optical unit 4 is read and moved in a subscanning direction A without a play and the read quality of reading is improved.
