SOLUTION: When 5 metrics are taken in around a provisional optimum point, at least one point is outside the control range and the value of recording current at this point exceeds the magnitude corresponding to 255 in the case where it is possible to adjust recording current in 256 stages of 0-255, the above 5 points which take metrics in are each moved into the control range. Metrics at 191, 207, 223, 239, 255 within the control range of recording current values are taken in, and the recording current value which gives zero slope for the tangent to a quadratic curve is obtained by the quadratic curve approximation.
