Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine the run-out of ink in an ink jet pen efficiently with high reliability. SOLUTION: Ink tanks 20, 22, 24, 26 are arranged to be conducted with an ink jet print head while having a wall and a large number of particles are placed therein and filled with ink. The large number of particles exhibit first reflectance when it is saturated with ink and second reflectance when it is not saturated with ink. In order to provide the particles with an optical access, a transparent window is provided in the wall of the ink tank 20, 22, 24, 26. A photosensor is coupled optically with the ink tanks 20, 22, 24, 26 and delivers detection signals of first and second reflectances.
