Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable gradation control by using a liquid crystal showing a chiral smectic C phase by using a specific chiral smectic C liquid crystal whose smectic layer has a chevron structure. SOLUTION: At the part of the chiral smectic C liquid crystal 13 sandwiched between substrates 11 and 12, liquid crystal molecules 14 rise at a specific pretilt angle α from the substrates 11 and 12 nearby the interface of the substrate 11 or 12 along the uniaxial aligning processing direction A of the substrates 11 and 12 and form the smectic layer 16 in chevron structure having a tilt angle δto the substrate normal between the substrates 11 and 12. Then this liquid crystal device is characterized by having an alignment state wherein the mean molecule axis of molecules 14 of the liquid crystal 13 substantially meet with a mean uniaxial alignment process axis and/or the center axis of the maximum tilt of the liquid crystal 13 by electric field application when no electric field is applied and by that the transmitted light intensity varies with an electric field applied to the liquid crystal 13 when the electric field is applied. The characteristics are used to make a gradational display. |
