BARBITURIC ACID DERIVATIVE AND PREVENTIVE AND THERAPEUTIC AGENT OF BONE AND CARTILAGE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the subject novel compound that is useful as an active ingredient for pharmaceutical composition that is useful for prevention and treatment of diseases of bone and cartilage. SOLUTION: This novel compound is represented by formula I [R and R are each H, a 1-15C (substituted) alkyl or alkenyl; a (substituted) arylmethyl or a (substituted) arly; R is a 1-15C (substituted) alkyl or alkenyl; a (substituted) arylmethyl or a (substituted) aryl], typically 1,3-dibenzyl-5-(3-methyl-1-oxobutyl) barbituric acid. The compound of formula I is prepared, for example, by condensation reaction of a barbituric acid derivative of formula II with an acylating agent of formula III. The daily dose of the compound of formula I is 0.01-2 g (about 0.15-30 mg/kg/day).
