HIGH-YIELD PULP-CONTAINING PRINTING PAPER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject paper with high surface strength, suitable for newspaper by coating a surface treatment agent containing a specific modified polyvinyl alcohol in the papermaking process for the subject paper. SOLUTION: First, a surface treatment agent containing a modified polyvinyl alcohol composed of 6-17 mol.% of structural unit of formula I (R is H or methyl; M is H, sodium, potassium or ammonium) and 64-83 mol.% of structural unit of formula II is prepared. This high-yield pulp-contg. printing paper with improved surface strength is obtained by coating the surface of the final printing paper in its intermediate stage with the above surface treatment agent at 0.02-0.5 g/m in terms of the modified polyvinyl alcohol on a solid basis per one side.
