Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To economically obtain without any disadvantage a formylimidazole useful as an important intermediate for producing diuretics or the like, by performing a catalytic oxidation in the presence of a peroxide. SOLUTION: This formylimidazole of formula I or formula II [R is H or a (substituted) alkyl; R is H, a (substituted) alkyl, aryl or the like; R is H or a (substituted) alkyl] is obtained by catalytic oxidation of a hydroxymethylimidazole of formula III or formula IV in the presence of a noble metal catalyst (pre. platinum/bismuth catalyst or platinum/lead catalyst) and also in the presence of a peroxide (pref. hydrogen peroxide) pref. at 20-120 deg.C; wherein it is preferable that the catalytic oxidation is carried out in the presence of water, a polar solvent miscible with water, nonpolar solvent immiscible with water, or a mixture thereof, in an alkaline medium incorporated with an alkali metal hydroxide or the like.
